Skills Test Information

The first step in taking a skills test is to make an appointment. You can either use MVA's Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to schedule your test or you can visit the office where you want to take the test and make the appointment.

Do you need a vehicle to take your test?YES

Class C -
Noncommercial

Required to bring:

Vehicle you will be driving and a valid registration card.

Must be in the proper class.
If you are driving a rental vehicle, your name must appear on the rental contract as an authorized driver and you must have the rental contract with you.
Must be in safe operating condition. A list of the items checked by the MVA is available in the chart. Additional information is available in the Maryland Driver Handbook (form # DL-002B).

Pre-trip inspection
- Windshield must be free of cracks;
- Tires must have adequate tread; no bulges, etc.;
- Both front doors must open and close properly from inside and outside;
- Must have operable seat belts for the driver and passenger;
- Headlights and taillights/lenses must be present and intact. (The appropriate color repair paper is authorized)
- Brakes must be safe/adequate;
- Accelerator must be safe/adequate;
- Must have inside, rearview, and outside mirror(s) as appropriate to vehicle class and driver's restrictions, if any;
- Front seats must be present, securely mounted and safe;
- Windshield wipers and defroster must be present and operable (if inclement weather);
- Exhaust system must be secured and in proper operating condition;
- Gas cap must be present;
- Glove box must be closed (may be taped closed);
- Dash board warning indicator lights must work;
- Interior of vehicle must be free of loose objects, which may be a hazard.
Basic skills test (closed course)
- Parallel Parking
- - Parking space available is 6 feet wide by 25 feet long;
  - Right side vehicle tires must both be 12 inches or closer to the curb;
  - Test is timed (maximum 3 minutes):
    More than 3 minutes - 16 points (automatic disqualification).
- Turnabout
- - Must turn vehicle 180 degrees (opposite direction) with a space that is 26 feet wide by 30 feet long;
  - Test is timed (maximum 3 minutes);
  - More than 3 minutes - 16 points (automatic disqualification).
