What Should We Practice Between Driving Lessons? A Parent’s Starting Plan

The first question many parents ask between driving lessons is simple: What should we practice next? A short, focused plan helps the learner and coach begin with the same goal.

Start with one goal

Before practice, agree on one skill to work on and how you will recognize improvement. Ask the learner what feels comfortable and what still needs explaining. Choose practice conditions appropriate to their experience and follow the applicable permit and supervision requirements.

Keep the conversation clear

Agree on calm, brief directions before moving. Discuss how either person can request a pause. Review videos, checklists and phone-based tools while parked; the learner’s attention belongs on driving.

Record what actually improved

After parking, talk about one thing that went well, one situation that needed help and one skill to repeat. Specific observations give your next practice—and your next conversation with a professional instructor—a clearer starting point.

Try a guided first practice

LearnerMiles is a digital driving-practice companion for new drivers, parents and coaches. Its Free First Drive Kit introduces vehicle controls, parking-lot practice and a progress record. Registration is required to unlock the free record; no payment or card is required. The full workbook is an optional paid subscription.

LearnerMiles was created by Drivers Edu founder SaSheen Maple. This is a resource from the same founder, shared to help families structure supervised practice. It supplements professional instruction and official requirements; it does not replace them.
